About
The Sound program at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) is grounded in an institution that brings together art, design, and theory as closely related fields of practice and inquiry. Sound is approached as a medium of artistic practice, in dialogue with the visual, conceptual, and technological concerns that shape work across the HfG.
Its profile centers on electronic music and its aesthetic history, DIY and experimental approaches to sound, spatial sound, and the relations between traditional musical practices and contemporary art. Young artists develop technically rigorous, conceptually grounded work, supported by specialized studio infrastructure.
International exchange is central to the program. Sustained collaborations with artists, researchers, and institutions, including the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe, place Karlsruhe within ongoing conversations in sound art and experimental music worldwide.
The program is led by Paul Modler and Lorenz Schwarz, who together shape its teaching and artistic direction.
